Auckland Starship is a hospital primarily attended by young children; naturally, their visits also mean the presence of their parents. The hospitalization of a child can be an immensely painful and distressing experience for parents. Healeon is a sensory garden thoughtfully designed to provide comfort and emotional relief for the adults accompanying children to Auckland Starship. Through this sensory garden, parents and caregivers are offered a tranquil space to find solace, regain composure, and restore their emotional well-being.

The hospital environment places a considerable emotional and psychological burden on the families of paediatric patients; in particular, the sterile, austere indoor atmosphere and the scarcity of green spaces are cited as key factors that intensify stress, anxiety, and burnout.

The project is titled Healeon, a sensory garden designed for Starship Hospital in Auckland. It is intended for children visiting the hospital and their parents, offering a healing experience through four distinct zones each featuring unique scents and sensory elements. The goal is to provide emotional relief and comfort for both the child and the parent during their hospital visit.

This is the floor plan for our Sensory Garden, which is designed to be located on the balcony of Starship. The garden is divided into four distinct sections: lavender, hydrangea, mint, and citrus, arranged from left to right. A Wave Bench serves as a central feature and is installed in every section of the garden. The Lavender Garden features a dome-shaped roof constructed from lavender flowers. The Hydrangea Garden is characterized by hanging pots that are distributed throughout the space. The Mint Garden includes a structure composed of stones and mint plants. In the Citrus Garden, a citrus tree is placed behind the bench.

For the production of the promotional video, a detailed storyboard was first developed. The narrative centers on a young child’s hospital visit, an experience that brings emotional distress to their parents. However, through the sensory garden, both parents and children are able to heal and create meaningful memories together. To effectively convey this mood and emotion, a line drawing animation technique was selected, with subtle shakiness incorporated to enhance the impression of hand-drawn illustrations.

Based on the initial storyboard I created, I developed the first draft of the animation. Once the final story and script were confirmed, I collaborated with a member of the graphics team to receive drawings in a new style. Using these drawings, I proceeded to produce the final animation.

The video aimed to delicately capture the emotions experienced by parents at Starship, while clearly communicating the benefits offered by the Sensory Garden. To highlight the unique advantages of each section, the distinct colors of each area were incorporated into the video. Additionally, slow-motion effects were utilized to enhance the overall visual experience.

We designed an interactive board placed at the entrance of Starship, allowing visitors to explore the garden experience through touch interaction. The installation incorporates scent to create an immersive, site-like atmosphere for first-time visitors.

Healeon was a collaborative project focused on designing for a community sensory garden at Auckland’s Starship Hospital. Over eight weeks, I was responsible for creating the promotional motion video, aiming to evoke empathy and emotional resonance through a refined line-drawing animation style.
To capture the story’s emotional tone, I utilized a subtle, hand-drawn aesthetic paired with calm, melancholic music. I refined the storyboard and continuously iterated on the line-art style until it visually aligned with our intended emotional impact. Through this process, I learned to embrace multiple perspectives, explore visual sensitivity beyond my own, and experiment with variations within a single visual style.
This project was a meaningful return to motion graphics, allowing me to reconnect with both my storytelling ability and expressive design skills.
